| So he crept downstairs | Итак, он спустился на цыпочках по лестнице, |
| and opened the front door quite softly, | тихонько открыл входную дверь, |
| and went out into the garden. | и вышел в сад. |
| But when the children saw him | Однако когда дети увидали его, |
| they were so frightened that they all ran away | они так сильно испугались, что тут же разбежались, |
| and the garden became winter again. | и в саду вновь воцарилась зима. |
| Only the little boy did not run, | Лишь маленький мальчик не убежал, |
| for his eyes were so full of tears | ибо его глаза были настолько залиты слезами, |
| that he did not see the Giant coming. | что он не видел приближающегося к нему Великана. |
| And the Giant stole up behind him | И Великан тихо подкрался сзади, |
| and took him gently in his hand, | нежно взял его в свои руки, |
| and put him up into the tree. | и посадил на дерево. |
| And the tree broke at once into blossom, | И дерево сразу же расцвело, |
| and the birds came and sang on it, | и прилетели поющие птицы, |
| and the little boy stretched out his two arms | а малыш протянул обе руки, |
| and flung them round the Giant's neck, | обхватил ими шею Великана, |
| and kissed him. | и поцеловал его. |
| And the other children, | И разбежавшиеся дети, |
| when the saw that Giant as not wicked any longer, | увидав, что Великан теперь больше не злой, |
| came running back, and with them came the Spring. | примчались назад, и с ними вернулась Весна. |
| "It is your garden now, little children," said the Giant, | "Отныне, дети, это ваш сад," произнёс Великан, |
| and he took a great axe and knocked down the wall. | и, взяв большущий топор, снёс стену. |
| And when the people were going to market at twelve o'clock | А когда в полудня люди отправлялись на рынок, |
| they found the Giant playing with the children | то увидели, что Великан играет с детьми |
| in the most beautiful garden | в самом прекрасном саду на свете, |
