| The poor children had now nowhere to play. | Теперь бедным детям негде было играть. |

| Then the Spring came, and all over the country | Вскоре пришла Весна, повсюду |
| there were little blossoms and little birds. | распустились цветки и порхали птицы. |
| Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter. | И лишь в саду Эгоистичного Великана по-прежнему оставалось зима. |
| The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, | Птицы не желали в нём петь, так как там не играли дети, |
| and the trees forgot to blossom. | а деревья забыли расцвести. |
| Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, | Один цветок показал свою прекрасную головку из травы, |
| but when it saw the notice-board | но когда он увидел табличку с предупреждением, |
| it was so sorry for the children | ему так стало жалко детей, |
| that it slipped back into the ground again, | что он опять спрятался в землю |
| and went off to sleep. | и заснул. |

| "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, | "Весна позабыла этот сад," кричали они, |

| The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, | Метель укрыла траву своим большим белым покровом, |
| and the Frost painted all the trees silver. | а Мороз посеребрил все деревья. |
| Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, | Затем они пригласили Северный Ветер в гости, |
| and he came. He was wrapped in furs, | и он пришёл. Укутанный в меха, |

| and blew the chimney-pots down. | и задул огонь в каминах. |

| So the Hail came. | И пришёл Град. |
| Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle | Каждый день по три часа он гремел по крыше замка, |
| till he broke most of the slates, | до тех пор пока почти всю ее не испортил, |
| and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go. | а потом он кружил по саду, так быстро, как мог. |
