| He saw a most wonderful sight. | Он увидел прекраснейшее зрелище. |
| Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept in, | Дети прокрались в сад сквозь дыру в стене, |
| and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. | и возвышались на ветвях деревьев. |
| In every tree that he could see there was a little child. | На всяком дереве, которое он видел, было по малышу. |
| And the trees were so glad to have the children back again | И деревья были настолько довольны возвращению детей, |
| that they had covered themselves with blossoms, | что сразу же покрылись цветами(расцвели) |
| and were waving their arms gently above the children's heads. | и мягко покачивали своими ветвями над детскими головками. |
| The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, | Вокруг летали и восторженно щебетали птицы, |
| and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. | а цветы выглядывали из под травы и хохотали. |
| It was a lovely scene, | Это была умилительная картина, |
| only in one corner it was still winter. | но в одном уголке всё ещё была зима. |
| It was the farthest corner of the garden, | В самом дальнем углу сада, |
| and in it was standing a little boy. | и в нём стоял маленький мальчик. |
| He was so small | Он был настолько маленьким, |
| that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, | что не был в силах дотянуться до ветвей дерева, |
| and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly. | и ходил вокруг него, горько плача. |
| The poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, | Бедное дерево до сих пор было охвачено инеем и снегом, |
| and the North Wind was blowing and roaring above it. | вдобавок над ним дул и свистел Северный Ветер. |
| "Climb up, little boy," said the Tree, | "Взбирайся наверх, малыш" говорило Дерево, |
| and it bent its branches down as low as it could; | и склоняло свои ветви вниз настолько, насколько могло, |
| but the boy was too tiny. | но мальчик был слишком маленьким. |
| And the Giant's heart melted as he looked out. | От этой картины сердце Великана растаяло. |
| "How selfish I have been!" he said; | "Каким же я был эгоистом!" сказал он, |
