| The lords of the bedchamber, who were to carry his Majesty’s train | Камергеры, которым полагалось нести шлейф его величества, |
| felt about on the ground as if they were lifting up the ends of the mantle. | перебрали руками по полу, будто приподняли шлейф. |
| Then they pretended to be carrying something | Затем они притворялись, что несут его, |
| for they would by no means want to appear foolish or not fit for their jobs. | ибо боялись показаться глупцами и негодными для своей работы. |
| The Emperor walked under his high canopy | Так Король пошёл под красивым балдахином |
| in the midst of the procession, through the streets of his capital. | в середине процессии на улицы своего города. |
| All the people standing by, and those at the windows, cried out, | Все люди, выглядывающие из окон, кричали: |
| "Oh! How beautiful are our Emperor’s new clothes! | "Ах! Как прекрасен новый наряд Короля! |
| What a magnificent train there is to the mantle; | Как великолепен шлейф на наряде, |
| and how gracefully the scarf hangs!" | а как чудесно сидит шарф!" |
| No one would admit these much admired clothes | Никто не признавался, что восхищается нарядом, |
| could not be seen because, in doing so, | который невозможно увидеть, вместе с тем, |
| he would have been saying he was either a simpleton | сказав это он боялся показаться тем самым глупцом, |
| or unfit for his job. | либо негодным для своей работы. |
| "But the Emperor has nothing at all on!" | "Но Король ведь голый!" |
| said a little child. | вдруг сказал какой-то ребёнок. |
| "Listen to the voice of the child!" | "Послушайте, что говорит младенец!" |
| exclaimed his father. | воскликнул его отец. |
| What the child had said was whispered from one to another. | И все стали шептать друг другу слова ребёнка. |
| "But he has nothing at all on!" | Да Король же голый!" |
| at last cried out all the people. | наконец закричал народ. |
| The Emperor was upset, | Король опечалился, |
| for he knew that the people were right. | так как знал, что народ прав. |
| However, he thought the procession must go on now! | Тем не менее, он считал, что должен завершить процессию! |
| The lords of the bedchamber took greater pains than ever, | Так, камергеры стали ещё величавее, |
| to appear holding up a train, although, | и продолжали нести шлейф, хотя, |
| in reality, there was no train to hold, | в действительности, ничего и не несли, |
| and the Emperor walked on in his underwear. | и Король (всё это время) разгуливал (только лишь) в нижнем белье. |
