| So the faithful old wise man went into the hall | И пошёл верный старый советник в зал, |
| where the thieves were working with all their might at their empty looms. | где работали лгуны на своих пустых станках. |
| "What can be the meaning of this?" | "Неужели я глупец?" |
| thought the old man, opening his eyes very wide. | подумал старый советник, раскрыв от удивления глаза. |
| "I cannot find the least bit of thread on the looms." | "Я не вижу и ниточки на станках." |
| However, he did not say his thoughts aloud. | Однако, он не стал говорить об этом вслух. |
| The thieves asked him very kindly to be so good as to come nearer their looms. | А лгуны давай очень любезно его подзывать к своим станкам. |
| Then, they asked him whether the cloth pleased him. | И спрашивать, нравится ли ему наряд. |
| They asked whether the colors were not very beautiful. | По вкусу ли ему прекрасные цвета. |
| All the time they were pointing to the empty frames. | Всё это время они показывали на пустые станки. |
| The poor old wise man looked and looked. | А бедняга советник всё смотрел-смотрел. |
| He could not see anything on the looms for a very good reason. | Но никак не мог ничего разглядеть на (пустых) станках по понятной причине. |
| There was nothing there. | (Неудивительно,) ведь там ничего и не было. |
| "What!" thought he again. | "Как это возможно?" продолжал думать советник. |
| "Is it possible that I am a fool? | "Неужели я глупец? |
| I have never thought so myself. | Я и подумать такое не мог. |
| No one must know it now if I am so. | Никто не должен знать про это, если это так. |
| Can it be, that I am unfit for my job? | Неужели я не на своём месте? |
| No, the Emperor must not know that either. | Нет, Король не должен об этом узнать. |
| I will never tell that I could not see the stuff." | Я ни за что не признаюсь, что не вижу ткани". |
| "Well, Sir!" | "Что же вы ничего не говорите?" |
| said one of the weavers still pretending to work. | спросил один из лгунов, всё также делая вид, что работает. |
| "You do not say whether the cloth pleases you." | "Вы так и не сказали, понравилась ли вам ткань". |
| "Oh, it is excellent!" | "Ох, да что вы, просто прекрасно!" |
| replied the old wise man, looking at the loom through his spectacles. | ответил советник, глядя на станки сквозь очки. |
| "This pattern, and the colors. | "Какой узор, а какие цвета. |
| Yes, I will tell the Emperor without delay, how very beautiful I think them." | Да, несомненно, я сообщу Королю, что мне очень нравится". |
| "We shall be much obliged to you," | "Прекрасно, мы будем очень благодарны вам за это" |
| said the thieves. | сказал лгун. |
| Then they named the many colors | Затем они начали называть краски |
| and described the pattern of the pretended stuff. | и объяснять про узоры своей невидимой ткани. |
| The old wise man listened with care to their words | А старый советник стал внимательно их слушать, |
| so he might repeat them to the Emperor. | чтобы в точности доложить их Королю. |
| The thieves asked for more silk and gold | А потом, лгуны снова стали требовать больше шёлка и золота, |
| saying that it was necessary to complete what they had begun. | дескать, это всё необходимо, чтобы завершить наряд. |
| Once again they put all that was given them into their knapsacks. | Но они всё данное им снова прикарманили. |
| They went on working with as much effort as before at their empty looms. | И продолжали делать вид, что усердно работают за пустыми станками. |
