A Kidnapped Santa Claus

But to this, as to other like taunts, Santa Claus answered nothing.

Но на это, как и на другие похожие насмешки, Санта Клаус ничего не ответил.

He was much grieved by his capture, it is true; but his courage did not forsake him.

Он был очень огорчён пленением, это верно; но мужество не покинуло его.

And, finding that the prisoner would not reply to his jeers, the Daemon of Malice presently went away, and sent the Daemon of Repentance to take his place.

И поняв, что узник не будет отвечать на его колкости, Демон Злости, спустя некоторое время ушёл,  и послал на своё место Демона Раскаяния.

This last personage was not so disagreeable as the others.
He had gentle and refined features, and his voice was soft and pleasant in tone.

Этот персонаж не был таким же неприятным как другие.
У него были нежные и утончённые черты лица, и его голос звучал  мягко и приятно.

"My brother Daemons do not trust me overmuch," said he, as he entered the cavern;

"Мои братья Демоны не слишком мне доверяют," сказал он, когда вошёл в пещеру;

"but it is morning, now, and the mischief is done. You cannot visit the children again for another year."

"но уже утро, и злое дело сделано. Ты не сможешь вновь навестить детей до следующего года"

"That is true," answered Santa Claus, almost cheerfully;
"Christmas Eve is past, and for the first time in centuries I have not visited my children."

"Это так," ответил Санта Клаус, почти весело,
"Рождество прошло, и впервые за века я не навестил своих детишек".
